Abstract

This short report describes the findings from an HIV/AIDS programme for young women that was held in two Nigerian cities. Very little information is available on interventions that address the needs of young Nigerian women; a population that represents a high incidence and prevalence of HIV and AIDS. Responses were elicited from the programme participants through the use of pre- and post-test questionnaires, with a view to identifying effective health education strategies for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS among young Nigerian women. Outcomes revealed low knowledge levels, poor attitudes and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS as well as widespread stigma. This indicates a continual need for the design and implementation of a comprehensive and culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS and sexual health program for young women in Nigeria which meets their needs.
