Professor H. A. Webber pointed out how the history of nations had shown that the population of countries stands in direct relation to the food-supply, that it was the province of agriculture to convert the comparatively few inorganic substances in air and soil into organic compounds capable of being used as human food and raiment, and that as this conversion was fundamentally chemical it was the function of chemistry to place agriculture on a sound scientific basis, free from all empiricism.
