Abstract

The existence of a small business sector presents certain advantages to economic households. The continued existence of the small business sector will be secured only if small businesses grow profitably. However, it seems that profitable growth is the exception and when it does occur, growth is uncontrolled and the results thereof are negative. The question is therefore : Why do some businesses grow profitably and others not? This study focuses on profitable growth with specific reference to factors that contribute to / determine profitable growth, the managing of those factors to ensure profitable growth in small and medium-sized businesses, and the occurrence of such factors during the organisational life cycle.
