As a result of the current process of transformation in South Africa, this country is facing challenges in many areas. There is a vital need in this young democracy to have an education system that will foster a commitment to excellence and a strong work ethic. The school will have to play a major role in the development of these values.
In this article a description is given of various approaches to value education, as well as to curriculum development. An attempt is made to show the extent to which these approaches and orientations feature in Curriculum 2005.
Conclusions and recommendations are made in the final section. The main conclusion is that certain curriculum orientations and approaches to value education are part of Curriculum 2005, but that value education is proving to be a minefield rather than a panacea.
