Abstract

An analysis is done of sexism, gender role stereotyping, norms with reference to marriage and the family and the general acceptance of violence, as socio-cultural factors impacting on the manifestation and maintenance of violence against women in contexts of cohabiting and marital relationships. These socio-cultural factors manifest in social structures responsible for protection, prosecution and psycho-social service rendering and often contribute to the secondary victimisation of battered women.
