Abstract

The significance of eschatology for the theological enterprise has, after a period of neglect during the nineteenth century, only been fully appreciated during the twentieth century by systematic theologians and ethicists. In section two of the article the appropriation of the work of New Testament scholars on eschatology by systematic theologians in the development of their own systematic theologies is discussed. Section three deals with the influence of eschatology on the ethical debates of the twentieth century. It is concluded that Christian ethics is eschatologically centred and this is illustrated with a concluding discussion (section 4) of the ethical significance of the eschatological character of the Lord's Supper.
