Abstract

After having analysed the concept of just war in the first part of the article, a second historical model is considered, namely the Second World War. This was probably the best example in all of history of a just war, but even so, the Allies were themselves deeply tainted by the violence they had to commit. The general conclusion, therefore, is that the concept is too problematic to be used as paradigm for understanding the struggle between the apartheid government and the ANC prior to 1990.
