Abstract

Several thinkers have warned that globalisation and the rise of the network society might lead to a loss of the public realm, thereby posing a serious threat to democracy. Part one of this article discusses some of the relevant literature, particularly the work of Benjamin Barber. The author agrees that our current situation calls for serious reflection on the role of the public realm as a vital precondition for maintaining a democratic polity. In this regard, few thinkers can match the scope and depth of Hannah Arendt's thinking. Thus, part two of this article focuses on some of those aspects of Arendt's thought on politics that can shed light on the critical situation in which we find ourselves today with regard to the survival of democracy and human freedom.
