Abstract

In this article it is argued that two opposing forces, namely communication and transmission, mark globalisation. While communication focuses on the immediate effect of the communicative act, transmission attempts to place the latter within an enduring institutional framework. These two forces, the one representing time, the other space, cannot easily be reconciled. In fact, globalisation tends to emphasise communication at the cost of transmission.
