Abstract

This article focuses on the power of linguistic diversity in South Africa. The Afrikaans language is discussed within the context of the language demography of South Africa and with reference to the concept of linguistic and cultural identity in a globalised society. Against the background of the downscaling of Afrikaans since 1994 the effect of some misconceptions concerning language, is highlighted. The power of Afrikaans in a multilingual South Africa lies in the fact that it is a modern indigenous language and therefore as much a lingua franca as English.
