Act 4 of 2000, The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (RSA 2000, Act no. 4), the South African Schools Act, Act 84 of 1996 [RSA 1996a: Section 4(1), (2), (3)] as well as the South African Constitution [RSA 1996b: Section 29(2)] prohibit discrimination on the grounds of race. Yet, from a report of the Human Rights Commission, it appears that 60% of all South African learners are of the opinion that there is racism in their schools (Die Volksblad, 2001:4). Against this background an investigation was undertaken of the opinions, as well as experiences and/or observations of education related racism. By way of introduction this article presents a report about the opinions of a group of educators about racism. The definitions of the term given by the group of educators reflect the complex nature of racism. The educators identified phenological, cultural and institutional racism at individual, cultural and institutional levels. In the article the personal experiences and/or encounters of a group of educators with racism are also reported.
