Abstract


It is argued that the conventional measures in poverty alleviation (e.g. basic education, primary health care, community development, job creation) only deal with the symptoms of poverty, whereas the crux of poverty alleviation lies in the realm of moral and ecological values. These values are briefly discussed. New or transformed values imply the essential role of education (in the form of guidance, tuition or training). Some practical considerations and guidelines for the inclusion of moral and ecological values in the broad curriculum of educational institutions are given.
