This article explores the emergent shift in knowledge production from the traditional Mode 1 form of disciplinary knowledge to Mode 2 form of socially distributed knowledge in relation to higher education transformation. The article expounds on several constitutive features related to the Mode 1 and 2 forms of knowledge production, namely, knowledge in the context of application (socially distributed knowledge), transdisciplinarity, heterogeneity and organisational diversity, social accountability and reflexivity, and quality control. The argument is that Mode 2 should complement Mode 1 form of knowledge production in order to ensure that university education becomes more relevant within the context of higher education transformation.
