Institutions of higher education in South Africa have in the recent past been subjected to a series of mergers. A successful merger of a number of colleges of education took place in the process. This case study, from the perspective of the dean of a faculty of education and the rector of a college of education, focuses on their observations as participants in the process of merging the college with the university. Although each merger is a unique episode in the life of a tertiary institution, certain guidelines for steering such a process can be gleaned from these observations.
