Abstract

The ninth, improved and extensively revised edition of the (AWS) appeared at Pharos in September 2002, eleven years after the appearance of the previous edition at Tafelberg in 1991. This article sets out to identify the most important revisions that mark this watershed edition. Firstly, the appearance and structures of the new AWS are highlighted briefly, followed by a more detailed survey of the most important changes in spelling and writing guidelines for Afrikaans, including the noting of certain parts of the spelling and writing traditions of Afrikaans that have never before been described in the AWS. The word list section per se is not discussed, although reference is made to it. In effect a comparison between the 1991 and 2002 editions of the AWS is presented. Some problematic formulations and application consequences are identified and possible remedies suggested.
