n Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe - Antropologiese spel met identiteit : selfrefleksie op die Afrikaner

Volume 45, Issue 2

Afrikaans anthropologists have largely ignored the study of the changes undergone in Afrikaner culture and identity. In this contribution an Afrikaans anthropologist focuses not on the traditional anthropological "other" but rather on "us". Since the concepts of "culture" and "identity" are central to the anthropological handling of groups, these are examined first, followed by application to Afrikaner culture and identity. In the last section comments are made regarding those aspects that are prominent in the present Afrikaner debate. In the first section various theoretical viewpoints are juxtaposed, in the second section ethnographic examples are presented as elucidation, while the author's own opinion (which includes personal and normative considerations) is expressed in the conclusion.
