The protagonists in and are comparable because both are artists and both practise unusual arts, respectively culinary art and perfuming. Furthermore, in their own estimation, both are great artists, even though the purpose of their art is not to achieve lasting artefacts, but to influence people's lives, which, in a self-reflexive way, influences their own fortunes for better or for worse. Grenouille in condemns himself to annihilation by the product with which he aspired to elevate himself to greater than human status. On the other hand, Babette applies her art to release a group of elderly people from a soulless existence.
