Social initiation of newcomers into an academic institution has been with us for many years and has been presented in various forms. The way in which initiation into an academic context takes place, is based upon the social values and culture of an institution and forms part of the greater social-cultural environment. The aim of this research was to investigate the perceptions of newcomers regarding the social initiation into an academic context and to reflect upon these findings from a psychofortological / positive psychological approach. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected on newcomers' perception of formal and social initiation practices. The findings indicate that social initiation plays a significant role in introducing newcomers to the identity, values and processes pertaining to an academic and social environment. Some of these practices, however, do hamper human dignity, growth and development since they promote practices such as discrimination, power abuse and exclusion. From a positive psychological approach we reflect upon the possibilities to rather identify and facilitate more strengths and resources in newcomers, the academic context and interactions. In this way an upward spiral is facilitated whereby key aspects such as human dignity, respect, integrity in relationships, cognitive skills and social responsibility are developed and promoted.
