Abstract

This article is about freedom of religion, a guaranteed right under the new Constitution (1996), as an opportunity and a challenge for churches and religions in South Africa. It starts off by arguing that freedom is very important for Christians. It then continues with a few remarks on religion before going on to discuss various aspects of freedom of religion in order to try and determine what freedom of religion entails and what freedom of religion means for the public role of religion. In a last paragraph a few of the challenges that freedom of religion poses for churches in South Africa, are discussed.
