Abstract

The political views of Paul Kruger, State President of the South African Republic (Transvaal) from 1883 to 1902, are largely representative of the views of the republican Afrikaners of his time. During the period that he was in office a large number of books were published in which his ideas are summarised and evaluated. Academic publications which appeared in the course of the twentieth century interpret his views in various ways. This article focuses on interpretations concerning the following aspects: the origin of Kruger's political ideas, nationalist elements in his ideas and his view on the place of black people in the political system. It is pointed out that these interpretations are influenced by the political circumstances and dominant ideologies of the past 125 years.
