Definiteness in Afrikaans nominal constructions such as "die beskikbaarheid van brandstof" (the availability of fuel) and "die konfiskering van 'n paspoort" (the confiscation of a passport) is a factor of the semantics of the immediate syntactic context, the nominal construction. Constructions with definiteness determined in this way include complex noun phrases (with either complement or relative clauses) and noun phrases with a prepositional phrase introduced by "van" (of), for example "die hoogte van die gebou" (the height of the building . In these structures, definiteness is accounted for not in terms of the semantic relation of class inclusion but with reference to the semantics of predicate-term complexes - the lexical semantic core of nominal constructions. The nature of definiteness in nominal constructions is defined more sharply with reference to networks of contrast and variation involving predicate nominal constructions, indefinite nominal constructions, nominal constructions without articles and nominal compounds.
