Abstract

*In the spirit of Copley's article on Catullus 1 (1951) I have taken arida... pumice expolitum not quite literally. I understand expolitum to refer to the same type of literary ""polishing"" Horace required of poetry. See also Grimaldi 1965:90 who states that ""his [Catullus'] poems may seem to be trifles but...they have been worked over thoroughly"" (expolitum). In that case arida...pumice would refer to the physical labour or poetic effort required for the poetic idea to become the poem.
