South African Poetry, Drama and Narrative, an Archaeology and Mythology This essay explores the origins of poetry, drama and narrative in South Africa. It also poses questions on the status of such a search for origins. Is it science or is it mythology? To what extend does archaeology - the science of origins and evolution - overlap with mythology? Secondly: the material investigated corresponds to similar material in other parts of the world. Interesting parallels, for instance, occur in ancient Greek mythology and literature. I will make some comparative references to these. The implications of the similarities, though, must still be developed. Greece is isolated for comparison because of its important position in the construction of world literary history.
