Direct contact between France and the southern tip of Africa goes back more than four hundred years, and this article aims. by way of a general overview, to give some indication of the extent and nature of French writing in Southern Africa. This is not to suggest of foster any kind of cultural segregationism within the study of South African literature, but simply to serve as an introduction to one of the many semiotic practices in this field of study.
