In accepting one of Community Service Learning's (CSL) distinguished accolades from the University of the Free State, in October, 2004, Robert, G. Bringle (2004:9) predicated his presentation by quoting the following words from Boyer's definition of civic engagement: The scholarship of engagement means connecting the rich resources of the university to our most pressing social, civic, and ethical problems, to our children, to schools to our teachers and to our cities Following Boyer, he continued to say that, what is needed is not just more programmes, but a larger purpose, a larger sense of mission, a larger clarity of direction. Ultimately, the scholarship of engagement also means creating a special climate in which the academic and civic cultures communicate more continuously and more creatively with each other (Bringle 2004:10).
