Abstract

Theatre is often viewed as an index of the processes of social and cultural transition, and not surprisingly, post-election South African theatre bas come under scrutiny in the media recently. In a piece titled 'Looking Back in Nostalgia', Matthew Krouse rather bleakly refers to the 199415 FNB Vita National Theatre Awards as an opportunity to 'pay homage to founding fathers, and stroke their fledglings, encouraging them to follow traditional paths'. At the same time, he sees the trend towards revivals of works like the Junction Avenue Theatre Company's Sophiatown (1986) and Fugard/Ntshona/Kani's collaborative work, The Island (1973), as performing a necessary function in preserving the memory of Apartheid struggles.
