Abstract

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's importance as a postcolonial theorist committed to a politically engaged deconstructive practice was indicated on the occasion of the New Nation Writers Conference held in Johannesburg, 1991, where she was the only delegate invited as a scholar and not a writer. Spivak is seen by some as a theorist who effectively shuttles between the margins and the centre stressing the relation between race and capitalism, and the role of academics in the business of ideological production. From her own position teaching within the bosom of a superpower she claims to challenge the universalizing pretensions of the dehistoricising academy, and to foreground the production of philosophical writing and teaching.
