One of the major tasks in algebra is recognizing or creating in any of its various disguises. We can help students to think algebraically by using precise mathematical language with students, and expecting them to do the same. Just like this student, some students think slashing numbers means crossing them out. Students need to understand mathematically why the numbers went away.
