Abstract

Mathematicians have always been fascinated by the art and science of patterns (Joseph, 2000). In a parallel with the visual arts, to meaningfully engage with a pattern requires a necessary discernment of the principle on which its elements are ordered. Pattern itself does not lie in the individual elements, but rather the rule which governs their mutual relationship (Taylor, 1964:69-70).
