In the May 2010 issue of (No. 8) I reported on a variety of solutions offered by teachers to the "Staircase" problem ("Let Me Count The Ways", p. 56). The problem entails finding the sum 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + ... + n by finding the area of a staircase figure that has a base of squares as shown in Figure 1.
