Abstract

Silages produced from maize grown at 3,0; 9,7 and 22,2 plants per m2 were fed to young beef steers. Silage dry matter consumption and weight gain increased as the plant population fell. For every 100 kg of silage dry matter consumed, the steers showed an average weight gain of 13,7 kg, 11,3 kg and 10,1 kg on silage derived from maize grown at respective plant densities.
