Abstract

In 1969 the Tygerhoek Merino flock consisting of 800 ewes and their lambs was divided into five equal groups of 160 ewes each according to their 18 months wool production within age groups. Breeding rams for Groups 1 and 3 were selected on clean fleece mass at 18 months of age with limits on fibre diameter and crimp frequency. In Groups 2 and 4 rams were selected for a wider SIP ratio at three months of age.
