The faunal remains from six Iron Age sites in the north-eastern and eastern Orange Free State are examined and some of their implications are discussed. The dominance of herd animals among the wild fauna suggest that hunting was directed towards these animals, particularly the Alcelaphine species. Historical sources from the first half of the nineteenth century descriptionbe two methods by which these animals were obtained.
