Volume 25, Issue 2
  • ISSN : 0304-0798

All species of Coniopterygidae recorded from Africa south of 10° S and from the African islands of the Indian Ocean are reviewed. The total number of species recorded is 34, including 2 species only known from single female specimens, both of which may be conspecific with other species known only in the male sex. A key to all species is given. The number of species from the different countries are: Angola 1, Lesotho 1, Madagascar 3, South Africa 27, Réunion 2, Seychelles 3, South West Africa 3 and Zimbabwe 5. The origin of the fauna seems to be mainly Palaearctic, Spiloconis nebulosa Fraser, 1957 from Réunion represents a possible Gondwanian element. The following new species are descriptionbed: Aleuropteryx capensis, Coniopteryx (Xeroconiopteryx) dentifera, C (X) brothersi, C (X) frontalis, C (X) spatulifera, C (X) squamata and Hemisemidalis bipunctata. The males of the following species of which only the female was known are descriptionbed: Coniopteryx (C) caffer Tjeder, 1957, Hemisemidalis longipennis (Tjeder, 1957) and Semidalis maculipennis Meinander, 1975. New synonym: Semidalis uncinata Tjeder, 1957 = S. meridionalis Kimmins, 1935.
