Abstract

Excavations at the Mgede Shelter in the western Biggarsberg are reported. The deposits at this site have been dated to the mid- and late Holocene. The lithic and non-lithic cultural remains and faunal and floral residue recovered during the excavations are descriptionbed. In the ensuing discussion this information is used to comment on the mid- and late Holocene hunter-gatherer history of the area surrounding Mgede Shelter, and to make some preliminary statements on the position of Mgede Shelter in the broader Thukela Basin context.
