Abstract

Drosophilidae held by the Natal Museum (South Africa) have been studied. In the material examined there are 70 species belonging to 18 genera, one of which, Zaropunis gen. n., is new to science. Among the 70 species, 20 are descriptionbed as new, 10 have not previously been reported from southern Africa and 19 cannot be identified specifically. Although nine of the latter are recognised as new, they are not descriptionbed due to a lack of males. In South Africa 45 % of the species are endemic and the fauna of southern Africa represents a quarter (25,7 %) of the total fauna of the Afrotropical Region. The composition of the southern African fauna is discussed in relation to the rest of Africa and to other biogeographic regions.
