The subfamily Taraninae is represented in southern Africa by three species of the genus Taranis Jeffreys. 1870. namely T. miranda Thiele. 1925. from the Agulhas Bank, and T. inkasa and T. columbella, two new species from the continental shelf of Natal and Zululand. Several extralimital species are also discussed. Pleurotomella rhytismeis Melvill, 1910, from the Gulf of Oman, is shown to belong to Taranis; a full descriptionption is given, and a lectotype designated and illustrated. Bela erythraea Jousseaume, 1895, from Suez, is treated as a probable member of Taranis. a lectotype is designated, and the species figured for the first time. The holotype of T. ticaonica Powell, 1967, is refigured. The position of the genus Allo Jousseaume, 1934, within the Turridae is queried.
