oa Annals of the Natal Museum - Laryngeal and buccopharyngeal morphology of some South African Bufonidae: new data sets for anuran taxonomy

Volume 35, Issue 1
  • ISSN : 0304-0798

Descriptions of adult larynxes and larval buccopharynxes of Natal Bufonidae are presented. These appear to possess characters of taxonomic value and may contribute towards better definitions of species boundaries in problem taxa. The name Bufo pusillus Mertens, 1937 is used here for southern African toads currently called B. maculatus Hallowell, 1854. The author follows Channing (1991) in recognising Bufo poweri Hewitt, 1935. The Western Cape populations of Bufo pardalis Hewitt, 1935 are here called Bufo sp. A to indicate that they may be taxonomically distinct.
