Abstract

The stars were originally grouped into constellations about B.C. 2700 by an unknown race living in a latitude about 40 degrees North. The constellation designers paid little or no attention to shapes suggested by stars in any particular neighbourhood but requiring, probably for religious purposes, a dragon in one part of the sky or an eagle in another, they named the stars in those parts accordingly.
