Abstract

The conception of an expanding Universe is based on the observation that certain lines in the spectrum of distant clusters are displaced towards the less refrangible side and that this displacement increases in proportion to the distance of the cluster. Since we are accustomed to interpret displacements of spectral lines by motion in the line of sight, the inference has been drawn that the Universe 'in toto' must recede from us.
