Abstract

Satellite IV. exhibits phenomena which are not common to the other Galilean satellites. In volume it is about as large as III., and very much larger than II. or I., and it might reasonably be expected that it would take the second place in order of brightness, but its light is variable over more than a magnitude and it is normally the dimmest of the four. The three others, though possibly showing slight variation at times, can invariably be arranged in the order of brightness, III., I., II.
