Abstract

International mining industries in San Juan, Argentina, have developed rhetorical strategies to construct a positive image of their operations. They have built arguments to address pressing accusations of "contamination" and "robbery". Their strategy is to argue that companies perform important social actions in local communities: industries provide jobs, they take care of the ecology, they contribute to the economic growth of the town. Topics like memory, progress, economic wellness and responsibility are key commonplaces in the propaganda literature produced by the mining industry.
