Abstract

Small scale enterprises are acknowledged as being key players in the economy with a potential to contribute to household income. Female-owned enterprises are particularly seen as one of the best ways of uplifting the livelihood of women and elevating their social status. This study seeked to determine how female-owned enterprises in an urban setting were performing; to determine the barriers to the growth of those urban-based female-owned enterprise; and to find out from the entrepreneurs what they believed should be done to overcome such barriers. The findings of the study provide insights into what urban-based female entrepreneurs believe to be hindering the growth of their businesses and provide suggestions on how the perceived barriers can be dealt with.
