Abstract

Transport is crucial for development, because without physical access to resources and markets, health, education and other social services the quality of life suffers growth stagnates and poverty reduction cannot be sustained. In Tanzania rural roads are a great proportion of the road network but are in a very poor condition. Poor roads, and the resultant inadequate rural transport, limits the facilitating role of transport in both production and consumption activities. Transport improvements are critical for rural development and poverty eradication. Rural roads contribution can be viewed form the economic, investment and agriculture perspectives. The positive impact of improved rural roads can be observed in increased agricultural output and consumer demand; income benefits; time saved, security and safety income from economic initiatives by youths, distance and passability of road, and the use of intermediate means of transport.
