Abstract

The rise of co-operatives has been an important but relatively little-studied aspect of Botswana's development. At first the co-operative movement in Botswana was primarily oriented around livestock marketing, but in the mid-l960s it began to broaden into other areas. In 1973 a fisherman's co-operative was established in the Chobe District, and this organization has served as the focal point for the area's fishing industry. This paper is the result of an investigation conducted into the activities of this co-operative and examines its history, problems, and decline (from the viewpoint of the viability of a fishing industry in Chobe).
