Abstract

Having regard to all the evidence that is available we have little doubt that fences around the Kalahari have caused a severe decline in the large herbivore biomass of the region. We also have little doubt that indiscriminate fencing, whether for disease control or of ranches, roads or railway lines, will have precisely the same effect on the wildlife populations in other areas of Botswana. We fully appreciate that these conclusions are opinions rather than proven facts but we suggest that they are sufficiently plausible to warrant serious consideration by planners and decision makers.
