Like most African countries, Botswana inherited from the colonial era a ""system"" of legal dualism, or rather legal pluralism, the African- and European-styled components of which operate in a form of tenuous co-existence. On the other hand, colonialism sowed the seeds of modern African nationalism, one of its ideals being to bring about a new, integrated national legal system.
