Abstract

For the first time in the history of census enumeration in Botswana, the 1981 census included a question which was specifically designed to unravel patterns of internal migration. Together with the now familiar questions on international migration this provides a more comprehensive overview of population movements than has previously been possible. In advance of the preparations for the next national census the purpose of this paper is to critically assess the definition of migration and the methods employed to measure it as a prelude to descriptionbing the main characteristics of population movements revealed by the 1981 census and comparing these with the findings of earlier migration surveys.
