Abstract

The climate of Botswana is characterized not only by low and erratic rainfall, but also by high temperatures and an abundance of sunshine. Throughout the year, the daily period of bright sunshine is high; monthly means are usually above 8 hours per day. These conditions favour harnessing the solar energy especially in the rural areas, e.g. for pumping water at boreholes, solar cooling at clinics or coupling photo voltaic cells to a battery to provide electricity at night. It is often necessary to store energy to overcome hours or days when the sun is hidden by clouds and therefore the likelihood of successive days of cloud is of considerable interest. Data on bright sunshine for a period of ten years have been examined for nine stations in Botswana. From this, various sunshine characteristics can be assessed: the number of days with limited sunshine, the likelihood of successive days partly overcast, and the number of sunshine hours per year.
