Abstract

During the weekend of November 9 and 10, 1985 a recreational fishing competition was held on the Chobe River near Kasane, Botswana. A total of 48 fishermen fished a total of 384 hours and caught 172 fish. The majority of fish caught were three-spot tilapia (Oreochromis andersonii. The overall species composition, biomass, size frequency and fishing effort are presented. Other biological and ecological information related to feeding and reproductive condition of the fishes caught is presented. The value of monitoring competition catches to obtain scientific information is discussed.
